Community

Connection to people, to nature and to communities is a source of knowledge as legitimate and vital as any other.

Scientists are not developed in isolation. They are formed by the people they encounter, the perspectives that unsettle them, and the communities that give their work meaning. Everything Innately Science builds is designed to put emerging scientists in that kind of company.

The Newspaper Project

A completed project in connection · 2024–2025

The Innately Science newspaper began as an experiment with a straightforward question: what happens if you give scientists, writers, artists and communicators a shared page and ask them to write about what moves them?

Over four issues it drew together contributors writing from Nigeria, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and beyond: a marine biologist and an archaeologist, a composer-playwright and a bioinformatician, PhD students, independent journalists, poets and artists. Most had never appeared alongside one another. Several were publishing their work for a general readership for the first time.

What the project produced was evidence. Evidence that science is enriched when it enters into genuine conversation with other ways of knowing. Evidence that people will write generously across disciplines and continents when someone builds the room for it. And evidence of what happens to a person when their thinking reaches an audience for the first time, which is, in the end, a form of development.

The Newspaper Project is now complete. It remains open: every article is published here in full, freely readable, and credited to the contributor who wrote it.

Our contributors

The people who built the newspaper remain part of Innately Science. They are researchers, communicators, artists and educators whose work reaches from octopus neuroscience to blue carbon, from Indigenous knowledge systems to the ethics of artificial intelligence. Their writing is the standing proof of what this community is for, and the network it created continues to shape what we build next.

The Field Learning Network

Around the world there are programmes doing extraordinary work. We are building a network of these learning environments so that emerging scientists can be developed by them directly.

Be part of it

  • Join the Field Learning Network, if you run a sanctuary, field programme, institute, school, research centre or community initiative that educates by immersing.
  • Develop through a workshop: experience Science Through Art yourself, or bring it to your school or organisation.
  • Find a mentor, or become one, for emerging scientists, educators and communicators.
  • Join as a participant in an upcoming programme, workshop or field experience.
  • Contribute to a training programme, if you have expertise, a practice or a perspective that emerging scientists should meet.
  • Join the Innately Science community and be part of what we build next.
